With over 17,000 islands, chances are your Indonesia captions are going to need some serious range.

Most of my visits came during port stops while working on a cruise ship, docking long enough to explore a little before we were off again.

A couple of self-funded adventures were squeezed in between contracts too: hiking through sulphur clouds at Kawah Ijen, watching dawn break over the craters of Gunung Bromo, and summiting Gunung Batur in Bali. Not bad for someone technically on holiday from their holiday job, if I may say so.

Is my experience extensive? Not even close. Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, spanning an area roughly 5.76 times the size of Malaysia. But what I did see gave me plenty of material for Indonesia quotes that go beyond "beautiful sunsets" and "found myself in Bali".
