9 weekend getaways from Kuala Lumpur when you need a break

weekend getaways from kuala lumpur

Sometimes, you just need to get out of Kuala Lumpur for a bit.

You don't necessarily need a long holiday, a plane ticket, or a week off work. A couple of days somewhere different can be enough to break up the routine, whether that means wandering around an old town, waking up to cooler mountain air, or doing very little somewhere surrounded by nature.

Fortunately, there are plenty of weekend getaways from Kuala Lumpur to choose from, whether you're after a small escape close to home or a little farther afield.

Some destinations are barely an hour away, while others are worth setting aside a whole weekend for.

If you're in need of a change of scenery, here are some good places for weekend trips from KL, from quiet nature retreats to heritage towns and beach escapes. How far will you go this weekend?

The best weekend getaways from Kuala Lumpur

Janda Baik

Escape to Janda Baik for… a nature retreat among the forested hills of Pahang.

Less than an hour's drive from KL in good traffic, Janda Baik offers a quieter side of the countryside, with winding roads, lush greenery and streams running through the village. It's a lovely setting for a weekend spent away from the city's noise and bustle.

You can spend the weekend in a riverside chalet, a secluded forest hideaway or a glamping site under the stars. For something more active, there are also outdoor activities to explore, including hiking and cycling.

Whether you prefer a quiet stay surrounded by nature or a weekend with a little adventure, Janda Baik makes a refreshing short weekend getaway near KL.

Bukit Tinggi

bukit tinggi

Visit Bukit Tinggi for… a little slice of Alsace in the Malaysian highlands, complete with colourful half-timbered buildings and cobblestone-style streets.

The main attraction is Colmar Tropicale, a French-inspired resort village modelled after Colmar in France. It's an unusual setting for a weekend trip from KL, especially if you'd like to wander around somewhere that feels different from the usual small-town escape.

For another change of atmosphere, head to the nearby Japanese Village, where landscaped gardens and a traditional teahouse sit amid the greenery.

Both attractions can be visited on a day trip, making Bukit Tinggi a convenient option when you fancy a change of scenery without committing to a longer holiday.

Kuala Selangor

kuala selangor

Visit Kuala Selangor for… a coastal escape where fireflies light up the mangroves after sunset and fresh seafood is worth lingering over.

Just over an hour's drive from KL, Kuala Selangor has several places worth exploring. Visit Bukit Melawati for its hilltop views and resident silvered leaf monkeys, explore Kuala Selangor Nature Park, or head to Sasaran Beach for a different coastal experience.

After a day of exploring, settle in for a seafood dinner before heading out on an evening boat trip to see fireflies flickering among the trees.

A day trip is enough to visit a few highlights, but staying overnight means you can enjoy the evening without having to rush back to KL afterwards.

Sekinchan

sekinchan

Head to Sekinchan for… sprawling rice fields, quiet fishing villages and the unhurried charm of Malaysia's countryside.

Around an hour and a half to two hours from KL, Sekinchan makes a refreshing day trip from KL if you fancy a change of scenery.

Depending on the season, the paddy fields shift from lush green to golden yellow, giving the landscape a different feel throughout the year.

There's something about the open fields and quiet rural surroundings that might remind you of the countryside in a Studio Ghibli film.

Melaka

melaka

Head to Melaka for… heritage streets, centuries-old shophouses, and the lingering charm of a historic town by the river.

Melaka is a popular weekend getaway from KL, with plenty to explore on foot, from the colourful buildings around Dutch Square to the shophouses and food stalls along Jonker Street.

Although I've only visited on day trips myself, staying overnight sounds worthwhile for experiencing the town after the daytime crowds thin out.

Melaka shares a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription with George Town, recognising the cultural heritage of both historic cities.

Fraser's Hill

fraser's hill

Escape to Fraser's Hill for… misty forest trails, Tudor-style cottages, and the nostalgic charm of a little English village in the Malaysian highlands.

Often associated with its colonial-era architecture and village-like atmosphere, Fraser's Hill offers a different kind of nature getaway near KL.

With its cooler climate and slower pace, Fraser's Hill is a highland retreat for a weekend spent among the trees, particularly if you'd rather enjoy nature than hop between tourist attractions.

Ipoh

ipoh

Head to Ipoh for… old-town charm, limestone hills, and a food scene that makes the journey worthwhile.

Ipoh is known for its old-school kopitiams, white coffee, and local hawker dishes, alongside heritage shophouses and colourful street murals.

From chicken rice and bean sprout chicken to kaya toast and tau fu fah, there's plenty to try between exploring the city's sights and stopping for coffee. Ipoh is a good weekend trip for food lovers who enjoy discovering a place one meal at a time.

It's a bit of a drive from KL, so taking the ETS train is worth considering if you'd rather avoid driving fatigue. Some of Ipoh's central attractions are walkable from one another, although you'll need other transport to reach places farther out.

George Town

george town

Head to George Town for… Penang's legendary hawker food, colourful street art, and a UNESCO-listed historic centre.

Penang is often mentioned among Malaysia's best food destinations, and George Town is a place to eat your way through char koay teow, assam laksa, nasi kandar and cendol, with stops to admire the street art and distinctive architecture along the way.

Its historic centre blends British colonial buildings with Chinese shophouses and other cultural influences. If you're interested in the country's architectural history, George Town is also one of the best colonial places in Malaysia to explore.

It's a long journey from KL, so I'd save George Town for a long weekend if possible. That gives you more time to enjoy the food and explore beyond the city centre.

Cherating

cherating

Visit Cherating for… a laid-back beach escape, swaying coconut palms, and the unhurried rhythm of life on the east coast of Pahang.

A good choice for a weekend beach getaway, Cherating offers a change of pace from Kuala Lumpur, with fresh seafood and a stretch of coast to explore.

It's a little further from KL than some of the other destinations on this list, making it better suited to a beach getaway over a long weekend if you have the time. That way, you can make the journey worthwhile and enjoy the coast without rushing back.
