22 things to do at the beach to relax and unwind

things to do at the beach

I love a good adventure. But I also love doing absolutely nothing… ideally horizontal, ideally with snacks, ideally somewhere the sound of waves drowns out everything else.

There's no shortage of beach activities, from moving and exploring to winding down. This list covers fun, relaxing, and mostly low‑effort things to do at the beach that make the day feel longer in the best possible way.

Some are best under the sun, while others are better saved for later – including a few things to do at the beach at night if you decide to stay.

Many of these ideas cost nothing at all, making them the best kind of fun free things to do at the beach, whether you're there solo, with a partner, or with a group of friends.

Pick a few, mix and match, or work your way through the whole list. The beach is waiting…

The best beach activities to relax, play, and unwind

1. Read a book or listen to a podcast

Reading by the sea feels different – the rhythm of the waves in the background, the warmth on your shoulders, the occasional gust that flips your page. Bring a book you’ve been saving for exactly this.

If reading isn't your thing, a podcast works just as well. Pop in your earphones, and switch off.

2. Sunbathe, or find a shady spot and nap

If you're a sun person, this needs no convincing. If you're not, find a tree, pitch an umbrella, and nap without guilt. Both are equally valid things to do at the beach. Just don't skip the sunscreen – the sea breeze makes it easy to underestimate how strong the sun actually is.

3. Set up a beach picnic

This is an underrated beach day idea. Eating fruit, sandwiches, and cold drinks with sand between your toes just feels better somehow. Pack a little more than you think you'll need – being at the sea does something to your appetite.

4. Journal, sketch, or just sit and watch the waves

The beach is one of the few places where staring into the middle distance is not only acceptable but actively encouraged. Bring a journal if you like to write, or a sketchbook if you prefer to draw.

Or do nothing at all, and just watch the water for a while. Sometimes that's the most restorative beach activity of all.

5. Float or bob in the shallows

Before you do anything else in the water, just float. Face up, arms out, let the water hold you. It's one of the most relaxing things to do at the beach, and it costs absolutely nothing.

6. Swim in the sea

Once you're in, it's hard to get out. Swimming in the sea is one of the most classic things to do at the beach. Swim out a little, turn back, and catch a wave toward shore. Bodysurfing adds a bit of fun – timing the wave, riding it in, and not quite sticking the landing.

7. Snorkel to see fish or underwater rocks

Put on a mask, face down, and suddenly you're looking at an entirely separate world. Fish weaving between rocks, sea urchins, coral, and colours you'd never guess were there from the surface. It’s one of the best beach activities if you want something a little more engaging than sunbathing.

8. Paddleboard or kayak

Neither requires prior experience. Paddleboarding is a brilliant full-body beach workout (often with a few early falls), while kayaking is more relaxing and lets you explore further along the coast at your own pace. Many beaches hire out equipment by the hour, so you don't need to bring your own.

9. Take a beginner surfing lesson

If you’ve ever been curious about surfing, a beach holiday is the perfect opportunity to finally do it. A beginner lesson with a local instructor takes the intimidation out of it entirely – within an hour, most people are standing up on the board, even if briefly.

10. Jog or walk along the shoreline

A beach run is a workout that doesn't feel like one until you're done. Sand – especially the softer, drier patches – works your legs harder than pavement, without the impact on your joints. If running isn't your thing, a long beach walk along the tide line works just as well. Either way, the shoreline at your own pace is a hard morning to beat.

11. Play beach volleyball or frisbee

Best with a group, though a frisbee works perfectly well with two people. Don't worry about keeping score. It’s more about the movement, the laughter, and the occasional dramatic dive for a ball that was never within reach.

12. Kick a ball around on the sand

No need for rules or goals. Just kicking a ball around is one of the simplest, most fun things to do at the beach.

13. Stretch or do some yoga facing the sea

If you like a bit of morning movement, doing it at the beach is a different experience. The horizon gives you something to focus on, the sand adjusts softly underfoot, and the sound of the waves does the rest. Beach yoga has a way of making the whole thing feel less like exercise and more like unwinding.

14. Build sandcastles or sand sculptures

There's no age limit on this one. Get creative. It's one of the best beach activities for kids, but just as enjoyable for adults. You'll be irrationally annoyed when the tide comes in.

15. Go beachcombing

One of the best things to do at the beach when it rains, as waves tend to wash up more interesting finds. See what the tide has left behind – seashells, sea glass, driftwood, unique rocks, sometimes even unexpected treasures.

It's also a chance to do some good: picking up litter as you go is one of the simplest ways to care for a beach. As for the natural finds, resist the urge to take them with you. In many places it's discouraged or restricted, and even empty shells play a role in the coastal ecosystem.

16. Draw messages or doodles in the sand

Write something, draw something, leave a mark behind. The tide will wash it away eventually – which is, depending on your mood, either poetic or deeply satisfying.

17. Observe coastal wildlife

The beach is teeming with more life than it first seems. At low tide, it becomes easier to spot – crabs darting between rocks, small fish in tide pools, shorebirds picking along the waterline. It’s a kind of nature watching that doesn’t need a guide.

18. Fly a kite when the coastal breeze picks up

The beach is one of the easiest places to fly a kite. Once it catches the wind, you don’t need to do much else.

19. Watch the golden hour

Worth setting an alarm for at least once. The beach at sunrise is a completely different place – quieter, cooler, and usually deserted in a way that feels like a small gift. Sunset is the beach at its most cinematic. Either way, the light is remarkable.

20. Light a beach campfire or fire up the BBQ

Where it's permitted, a beach campfire or beach barbecue is the perfect way to end a beach day. There's something about cooking outside by the sea that makes even the simplest food taste better. People gather around the fire naturally, conversations slow down, and the day winds out exactly as it should.

21. Stargaze

Away from city lights, a beach at night offers some of the clearest skies you'll find. Take a beach stroll, let your eyes adjust, and give it twenty minutes. You'll remember why people used to navigate by stars – and why so many people find the coast genuinely hard to leave.

22. Marvel at bioluminescence

Some beaches, in certain conditions, glow at night with a soft blue light – tiny organisms lighting up when disturbed by water. If the beach you're visiting is known for it, head down after dark, and watch where the waves break. It's one of those things that sounds almost too magical to be real, right up until the moment you see it for yourself.
