Back in university, two countries dominated every travel conversation: Japan and South Korea. Everyone seemed to have either just been, or was actively planning to go. The K-dramas, the street food, the cherry blossoms in Seoul – South Korea had a pull that was hard to ignore.

I didn't make it there the conventional way. My visit came later, through a port stop while working on cruise ships.
